You're absolutely right, sorry for the confusion. I did, in fact, already have the "update" parameter set, but i'd made a fatal error elsewhere. This is one of those super annoying mistakes that all coders STILL make even when they're experienced, can't see the woods for the trees sort of thing!!
In essence, if i was going straight to the login page and attempting to log in then the redirected page wasn't rendering becasue i hadn't created the ajax div to update, but if i was coming from another page, e.g. auto redirect to login if session user not set in "beforeFilter()" then the ajax div had already been created by that referring page. So basically i added the ajax div to my login view and now everything works fine. I can't thank you enough for all your help though, this is the kind of online community i'm proud to be part of, and i have more big projects using cake coming up so i hope i can give something back as i get more experienced.
