Hi Ben,

You can do what you describe and probably not hit any problems.

That said the disadvantage is:
1) You cannot know without searching again when the state you are 
looking at expires (vitally important - from an administrative pov - 
if there are future dated changes in the system, or if you are looking 
at backdated info)
2) You cannot know without seraching again if you are looking at the 
last state and therefore you could unknowingly create a new state 
which is basically invisible (is superceeded very soon after).

I'd be interested to hear what you end up with.
