Thanks for the responses. Reading that link, I think that vendor branching is exactly what I want - thanks Felix, I will let you know how I go. While I do currently update the Cake core every day, this is just out of habit, and will certainly stop once the app is deployed anywhere (still a bunch of tests to write, a little functionality to implement, and a lot of UI work to go). Hopefully that's about the same time as a final Cake 1.2 is released :)
AD7six - I agree that core hacking is to be avoided, and I only do it for items I also file on Trac.
