Perfect.

Langdon: right, I was editing the wrong database.php file.  I was
editing cake/database.php, which now I can't remember if it was there
(database.php.default) or I put it there.  Once I straightened that
away ...

Chris: ... I still needed to get the PW straightened up, something
like: GRANT ALL ON DZ.* TO [EMAIL PROTECTED] IDENTIFIED BY "psswrd";
under mysql.

Upon which I got the desired

CakePHP Rapid Development
Your database configuration file is present.

Cake is able to connect to the database.
