Instead of putting the load of sending the emails on your shared host ( who might well disagree with your newsletter is not spam philosophy ) why not use a service like constantcontact or campaignmonitor? They handle subscriber / unsubscriber and the legal issue with mass email and both of them have an api for embedding their functionality into other pages / apps
