I know it's a silly question, but do you have AllowOveride All set in
your Apache configuration so that it will read the .htaccess file?
I'd take a look at the Blog tutorail in the CakePHP manual for some
hints on how to get that setup.  It tripped me up at the beginning
too.

Once you get all the mod_rewrite issues out of the way, the error
messages that CakePHP itself gives when you have set debug to anything
other than 0 in core.php will tell you all you need to know.
