That was the "secret" I was missing out on.  I had never heard of the 
Alternatives system, but now I know that it is there, the light has gone 
on :-)

This is always a difficult choice.  I have a dedicated server with my 
ISP that runs FC4 and my office file/everything server runs FC5, so F7 
for the desktop looked like the best option.

I will keep Ubuntu in mind, though the thought of shifting now that I am 
set up is pretty scary.
