I've used:
    gEdit
    jEdit
    vim
    emacs
    NuSphere
    EditPad
    Programmer's Notepad
    Notepad++
    Eclipse + PHPEclipse
    Eclispe + PDT

My editor of choice is definitely Eclipse + PDT. I do some Java, lots of
web development, and PDT in combination with WST is an excellent
environment. Combined with PDT's support for multiple debugging methods,
Eclipse's ever-growing plugin population, and support for just about
every standard out there -- Eclipse is an environment made in heaven for me.

When determining what environment you want to work in, you need to ask
yourself which features you find useful. If you're not sure, experiment
with full-featured systems (along the lines of Eclipse, Zend, NuSphere,
etc), and play with minimalistic systems like vim, gEdit, etc. Determine
which features you need, then which you want, and then which would be
nice. From a list of features in that order, you can pretty easily
determine which environment you'll use. From there, customize it as you
can to fit your style.

There's no right or wrong answer when it comes to programming
environment. It's all about preference, style, and your needs.

NOTE: If you're working in a team, I'd recommend choosing an environment
as a group, getting good source control, and capitalizing on
team-centric features (see Eclipse + Mylar).
