Please either add a test to the test case which reproduces the problem
or otherwise provide a (complete) code example of how to reproduce
what you are experiencing (and add it to the ticket
https://trac.cakephp.org/ticket/2159).
The sizable test case for the tree behavior does not have the symptoms
you describe (if it's not reproducible it's not fixable not saying one
way or the other where the prob is).

PS discussions of a ticket belong on the ticket, otherwise the
discussion gets lost
PPS Some things are simpler with the parent_id than node logic, namely
finding direct children.
