First of all - that's not a bad way to upgrade to the newest version, in fact I would guess it is the recommended way.
An Internal Server Error can be a pain to figure out. Does it happen on all of your requests, or only some? Can you make a very simple case where it doesn't give the error? Does it still happen if you put your DEBUG level to 2, and to 0?
