The hosting for our site is 1and1 and I had a helluva time trying to
get the default CakePHP index up and running on the server. Eventually
I was able to just edit the .htaccess file in the Cake folder to give
rewrite access to only the Cake folder without messing up any of the
other subdomains.

I added this line at the beginning:
Options +Indexes +FollowSymLinks

and a few lines near the end:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^$ app/webroot/ [L]
RewriteRule (.*) app/webroot/$1 [L]

Hope this helps anyone running into similar problems.
