Backwards compatibility between PHP or MySQL versions is not the only
problem.

Most people (99.99% ?) order a web hosting plan, a domain name and
install their "cool" application in minutes but expect it to run for
3, 4, 5 years or more with no maintenance at all (even no backups...),
no security updates, no PHP/MySQL version upgrades, etc.

IMHO, *care* (or heedlessness) is the biggest problem.

Another problem is upstream developpers not releasing updated versions
of their applications, but that's another story.

But I may be wrong...
