I'd also recommend taking a look at the jQuery library. http://jquery.com
You can't use Cake's helpers, but the ajax is basically all the same. I haven't used jquery yet, but I've looked at the documentation and it's very impressive, and it's just as easy to use as scriptaculous (maybe even easier). I'm hoping the Cake core group will build a secondary jquery ajax helper someday.
