You should think of it in terms of ease of creating your application, not how much overhead you think it's creating. The goal of CakePHP is to let you rapidly build applications, and there is always a trade-off in performance when you use any framework. The HABTM lets you do things like Posts and Tags where a post can have many different tags and tags can be applited to multiple posts.
