Be sure to check out their status page http://www.dreamhoststatus.com
as well to get an idea of some of the recurring network problems
they've had this and last year. Keep in mind that they do have 1000's
of servers when you see all the "hardware being replaced" posts. For
the average Joe they are fine, but if you are a business and need 100%
reliability then they are not for you. Especially for email, but it's
simple to use GMail to handle your domains email. I say this having
used Dreamhost for the last year and a half. For regular php/mysql/svn
development I've had very little problems and it runs my seldom used
wordpress blog just fine. It _is_ the typical oversold shared hosting
so you may get the occasional slowdown on your sql/web server.

One thing to note, their current version of zend optimizer & php 5
( they're testing before upgrading for the last 4 months... ) has a
bug triggered by the use of __(), which is used by Cake to handle
internationalization? I'm not certain, but it's in the baked views in
1.2 and causes php to core dump. Version 4 on the server has never
given me problems, thank you Cake devs for seamlessly handling php 4 &
5 :)

Oh, and use a promo code like REM97 that gives you the maximum $97 off
your first years hosting. The cost for your first year should be less
than $30.

Sorry, that went a little longer than I had intended.
They have a 97 day money back guarantee, so you have plenty of time to
give them a try.
