IMHO,
Once I wrote an article pointing out the CakePHP would make PHP bondage-and-discipline. But no way I would say that CakePHP is Evil or Bad&wRong... First off, CakePHP is written in OO code. Therefore, in order to user its full pontential the programmer must KNOW OO. Secondly, the CakePHP is a framework. I guess he says he can write codes quicker because he would not have to struggle with the [Your Framework of Choice Here]'s model classes. CakePHP enables the programmer to produce better codes and shorter times _as long as you know how to do it_. I think the two great issues nowadays with CakePHP as I see them reading the posts here: the programmers cannot tell the difference between PHP and CakePHP. I see few posts regarding PHP instead of CakePHP. The other issue is, the rookie programmers expect the framework do all the magic for them -- and painfully they discover that the CakePHP tastes good, but is not the whole lunch. CakePHP produces better code, provides standards and quickly prototyping. I think your coworker is feeling threated by CakePHP. He'd better starting learning CakePHP and its design patterns. I am quite confident he will stop saying such attrocity.
