...or you could use mod_rewrite. :) The difficulty would be detecting the path for your core database config to determine which database to use depending on the requested path. I can't currently see how it could be done, but I don't think it would require all that much work so long as all of the files will in fact remain exactly the same but with different images/js/css and database data.
