They, the Mambo team, are developing everything in private. I am also
interested in the time table of their plan and check their forum 1-2
times a week, but nothing I could find. XOOPS team is trying to borrow
some resources from CakePHP to make its code base stronger. I had done
some works to prove it's possible to develop XOOPS modules rapidly
with CakePHP. But it had broken due to the recent changes from the
core of XOOPS. You could try them here:

I've tried several CMS projects based on CakePHP. GrenTea is more
stable than others. But it's still far from competitive with other
existing CMS projects. It's great to hear the information from you.
Hope there could exists one open source project for CakePHP, like
Magento of ZF. :)
