Hmm, this seems to be a problem of Cake not honoring the custom
$useDbConfig on the models and expecting the join table to be in the
default db configuration. Just creating an empty model like this
solved the problem:

class PlacesStation extends AppModel {
        var $useDbConfig = 'alternative';
}

Is that how it's supposed to be now?
