There are a ton of great hosting services out there. I have been on Westhost for about 5 years now and have loved working with them. I've got 3 clients on Westhost and they too have loved them. I had 2 clients train me on how to do their site updates and they have been working directly with Westhost as a non-techie group and they have called me up to thank me for having them hosted with them.
I have heard good things about other hosts like site5, etc. Honestly, the best thing you can do is find someone locally who has had a great experience hosting and just talk to them and get them to log in and let you play around navigating the control panel, get into the shell and play around, and call the hosting services sales / tech support lines and talk to them one on one.
