There is nothing in the Cookbook about the "joins" key. Once martin mentioned it I double checked. I then searched the code itself (dbo_source.php) and lo-and-behold, it does exist. I have yet to take a look and experiment to see what it does though.
Sorry if I hurt your feelings by venting that Cake isn't too popular with me right now. Thanks again martin for the tip about the "joins" key, hopefully someone else will find it useful as well.
