I've ran into this issue many times, and it's a major pain in the.. Anyway, if this error occurs when you try do display a PDF in your browser, killing adobe reader process usually helps. But not always.
After a while, I've discovered a beautiful alternative, FoxIt reader (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php), works well (much, much, MUCH faster than adobe reader), it's free, and I didn't see that error since I've switched. But of course, that might not help you, there could be something else causing the problem.
