(Echoing some of keymaster's comments)
And while many will disagree, I like having the available post
formatting options available with most forums. Syntax highlighting for
code, headers, etc. are all nice to have. The search feature here is
good, but no better than the search engines provided with SMF, phpBB,
vB, and other major forums (they make up for their lack of search
expertise by designing their search tool specifically for forum
content).

The main feature that I enjoy with forums is topic categorization. I
know where to go for new user questions, development questions,
general discussion, etc. For example, this post clearly belongs in
"Forum Suggestions" or "General Discussion." Then, those who come here
looking for answers to development questions know which subforum to
use.

Free hosting is nice, but I'd gladly contribute if I knew that my
contributions supported our own community software with richer
features than a Google Group.
