I believe, but could be wrong, that the trunk is the RC release and is
only updated on each release.

The branches svn is where the updates are added before a release is
made, so it contains the most up to date version. Else you can use the
nightly update which is approximately the same as the branches
version.

However with the branches SVN you get a brief user log entry about the
files that have been modified which can be useful.
