Because I need it in the view. CSS, JS, etc.

Again, as I pointed out in the original post, I realise that, thanks.

My question was about getting a value from the DB without using a particular
model. What I have works fine but I suspect there's a "cake way" to do it.
Perhaps I'll figure that out some day and change it. It'll do for now.
