I usually use xls2csv and then a custom php script to import that into the database. You can even wrap it into one operation by calling xls2csv from inside your php script. It isn't cake specific, but if you'd like my script contact me off list. FYI, I use linux and xls2csv is an available tool. Not sure if there is a Windows version. I think I ran it on Mac once using fink or port. It's part of catdoc I believe.
