ExtJs uses the concept of foundation libraries to provide things like DOM manipulation, event handling, animation etc.
Its class hierarchy is built on a foundation-agnostic adapter layer. You can use either ext-base as the foundation (A pure extJS foundation library), or Prototype, or jQuery, or YUI.
