After working with several people on the irc channel. We found that there is a bug with versions of libxml2 before version 2.7.3. Also in my case there seems to be a problem with the php 5.2.6 that is bundled for Fedora 10.
I still haven't gotten everything to work correctly. I may look at a different OS though. Hope this info helps someone.
