I implemented it and it works with one rather important drawback - HABTM queries are made separately and I think I can't use sort in pagination.
I was thinking... there's always only one associated instance in this HABTM relationship (a ticket has only one value of color). If it was possible to use belongsTo instead of HABTM, it would be one query.
