I'd say no.

Supposedly they should be faster but as you have noticed the caching
makes them lessa important. I made a few .mo files at first but I did
not find any significant benefit for my project and since I still
develop the app further (and modify the .po file about once a week) I
like to have the translations available in plain old text.
