Are you using Windows XP? I only get garbage characters on *any* plugin that uses the copy to clipboard functionality, CakePHP Export, Doctrine Export, Propel Export. All of these have the same problem. I filed the bug http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=44461 some days ago.
