If this is what your file looks like:
$ cat persistent/itemlinkregistry.php
<?php $ItemLinkregistry = 'a:1:{i:0;N;}' ?>
Its not saving it correctly because there is no object stored there.
$persistModel is very buggy, your best bet is to disable it for now.
