If you have a good feeling about Cake: Go for it! Dealing with complex data relationships is one of the areas where a quality framework (CakePHP) will really help you stay sane. Associations are 90% automatic once setup. (you might find one or two situations where you want to use your own query) There are tools to deal with optimizations while keeping things readable and structured. There are plenty of examples, tutorials and suggestions available online that deal with almost any possible situation.
Since you mention reporting and analysis I'll be cheeky and point you to my most recent article in the bakery. http://bakery.cakephp.org/articles/view/starschema-olap-setup-for-reporting This is an implementation of a StarSchema reporting setup for Cake. It is fantastic when you need to pull stats from transactional data. It would be something you might want to implement in your application since the data being analysed will be ever-growing and execs and accountants love comparing the last 5 years to the current one and so on.
