You might be able to do it using CSS. Specifically, using the :before
pseudo selector by giving your input a particular classname. This
wouldn't work in IE6 but, if you used jQuery to insert the image, it
should work.

$('input.YourClassName').before('<img src="star.png" width="x" height="x" />');

Or something like that. I'm not sure what the syntax for Prototype would be.
