And you are sure you are doing that using php4 and not 5? AFAIK __call is defined in the language in php4. Only in php5 did they add that. This is why cake has these two files. Compare them (overloadable_php4 and overloadable_php5) and you will see that the php5 version contains very little while the php4 version does a good job of overcoming the shortcomings of php4.
