Yes, this is what a couple of others have suggested. It was also one
of my original plans but I'd really prefer not to store them in the
same table, regardless of the fact they share many of the same fields.
However, it may well be the solution I use.

John's idea of using a "virtual" Attendee model seems like a better
approach but I'm a bit fuzzy on how to implement it.
