Thanks for the answers. I tried upgrading my CakePHP core to the latest 1.2.5 - but the problem didn't go away. The MySQL on MAMP (5.1.37) seems to be more up- to-date than my host MediaTemples (5.1.26-rc) ... which is concerning.
