What if you just override the action?
funciton beforeRender() {
if ($this->RequestHandler->ext == 'json') {
$this->real_action = $this->action;
$this->action = "json";
$this->viewPath = "shared";
}
}
function afterRender(){
if ($this->RequestHandler->ext == 'json') {
$this->action = $this->real_action;
}
