Thanks Jeremy. DB access is back, so it must just have been a momentary problem - but it hasn't made my site appear!
I'll try creating a dummy home page and see whether that helps. I don't know how to check mod_rewrite - I did have an earlier version of the site up before, and it worked fine, so I assume everything that's needed for CakePHP is on there. Thanks again.
