This isn't the answer you were looking for, but hopefully it's more helpful.
If your example above is your real-life code then why are you using ajax at all? There is no server side request for data as the data is already all there. Also why do you want to copy the id from the select list into the text field when you have it selected in the select list? Appears to me that you are approaching this from the wrong angle.
