The Heaven's Above site[1] (astronomy info) has a lookup tool for lat/ lon position of cities around the world. I use it regularly because I make maps (for print) and need to plot locations. Unfortunately, it's not a great interface. I'd love to re-design their site to offer the data in multiple formats. Anyway, it can be done. Must be a pretty large data set, though.
