Hi John I guess my first reaction is asking why you feel the need to make these components that know nothing (or very little) about the rest of the application. Is your intention to re-use the components - in which case portability is indeed your main driver? If not, then I'd be tempted to make these items more integrated with your application, which will reduce your challenge.
