Resolved - but I'm not sure why. I did some digging around and found this terminal command:
sudo rm /private/var/mail/<username> This cleared down my unix mail box on my Mac (which is a bit dramatic because it could have had important stuff in it - but I doubt it), but the emails immediately began to flow through.
