For myself, I am starting to learn CakePHP after having already used PHP for 8 years and created and maintained dozens of web sites with it. I would not necessarily recommend trying to learn PHP at the same time as CakePHP. My advice would be to become intimately familiar with PHP before attempting to understand someone else's framework.
