Perhaps DS is defined somewhere else.
Try putting the code in the webroot/index.php file
if (!defined('DS')) {
define('DS', DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR);
}
Place it just before:
if (!defined('WEBROOT_DIR')) {
define('WEBROOT_DIR', basename(dirname(__FILE__)));
}
