Cake 1.2 works fine with php 5.3. Several hosting providers lets you configure what version of php you want to use (for example, one of mine, let my choose between php 4, 5.0 or 5.3) Remember you always can change your hosting provider, so you can choose one that supports you desired php version. In case you want to upgrade cake "to the most recent version" I think you must see cake 2.0. It's a development version, but more or less, when you finish your migration it will be a production version. To change to an 1.3.x has no sense to me. Alejandro.
