I mean that there’s a sharp transition from one calculation to another at some 
multiple of the interval in the older implementations.  It always felt 
unnatural to me.

By contrast, Cobalt’s behaviour on re-entering dropping state depends smoothly 
on the time spent in the non-dropping state.
