To follow up, it also fails even when using /Search for the ldap node.
But within the dscl cli tool, the search for the email address succeeds:
> search /Search dsAttrTypeNative:mail sa...@test.com
Users/sarah dsAttrTypeNative:mail = (
"sa...@test.com"
)
