I found that Roy Hooper's instruction that doesn't work for me. I found same problem as you.
The cause of the problem is FreeBSD has its own kerberos so when the script setup.py execute commands.getoutput("krb5-config --libs gssapi") and commands.getoutput("krb5-config --cflags gssapi") it call FreeBSD's krb5-config instead call the command that you installed from kerberos's port. There are 2 solution. 1. Set your path like this, PATH=/usr/local/bin:$PATH 2. Modify your setup.py to commands.getoutput("/usr/local/bin/krb5-config --libs gssapi") commands.getoutput("/usr/local/bin/krb5-config --cflags gssapi") I hope this can help you.
