this dance has MANY great qualities - easy enough for most beginners, fun enough for most experienced dancers, different from other dances, very kid-friendly, fun with lots of different music (ask the band if they can play a rag) and not too much touching in HOT weather!

i am travelling in the south with beeswax sheepskin (ethan hazzard-watkins, anna patton, roger kahle, chuck corman) and we are in north carolina. so far this month, we've done walpole, baltimore, atlanta, charlotte (NC), knoxville, winston-salem, and now we're in chapel hill. we have two days off and then friday night we do the experienced only dance here, and then a house concert/dance party in a private home near chapel hill. then asheville, NC, but that's the band without me - i'll be back north by then.

fridiay's night's dance is giving me a chance to do something i haven't done before - to call an advanced dance with a band that i've just spent a week with. having just done five dances together, we know each other's style pretty well.

so i've set out a complete program for the night, and they have already chosen the tunes. two reasons for this - it's great to be able to match tunes to dances, and they won't have time to pick tunes between dances because there are no (or minimal) walkthrus allowed at the advanced dance. we rehearsed the whole thing, including calling, this afternoon. really great to find musicians who are so interested in working with callers! these guys have been great.

if i follow the program as written, it will be the first time i have ever done so!

in august, i will also play piano for a dance, for the first time in this part of the country (i played for a dance in houston a few months ago). buz lloyd (from north carolina) and cammy caynor will be playing with me. i'm guessing i'll see some of you there - it's the MIT dance.
